Download a template

Put the template on its own layer under your design in Canva, Affinity, Photoshop or InDesign, then hide it before you export. The PDF page is exactly the full cover size; the PNG is 300 DPI.

Leave the barcode area empty and KDP prints a barcode there for free. Printing somewhere else, or placing your own? Make an ISBN barcode.

// How it works

Three steps, all in your browser

1

Pick size, pages and paper

All 16 KDP paperback trim sizes, the five KDP ink and paper options, and custom sizes such as A5, in inches or millimetres.

2

Get the numbers KDP uses

Spine width is your page count times KDP’s thickness per page, plus 0.125 in of bleed on the outside edges. Every number comes from KDP’s help pages, listed below.

3

Download the template

A PDF exactly the size of the full cover and a 300 DPI PNG, with the trim, bleed, spine, safe areas and barcode area drawn in.

Good to know

  • Paperback only for now. Hardcover covers wrap around the boards and use other numbers.
  • Keep text 0.0625 in (1.6 mm) away from the spine folds as well: KDP allows that much shift when the book is bound.
  • KDP does not publish page limits for custom trim sizes, so only the size is checked. KDP checks the page count when you upload.
  • Check the cover in KDP’s previewer before you publish. KDP’s own files and rules win if they ever differ from this page.

// FAQ

Questions

How many pages do I need for spine text?

KDP says at least 79 pages. One line on the same help page says “more than 79”, and KDP’s Cover Creator needs 80, so 80 pages or more is the safe choice. Spine text also needs 0.0625 in (1.6 mm) of space on each side.

What is bleed, and how much does KDP need?

Bleed is the extra background past the trim line that is cut off when the book is trimmed, so no white edge shows. KDP needs 0.125 in (3.2 mm) on the top, bottom and outside edges. That is why the full cover is 0.25 in wider and taller than back, spine and front together.

Can I work in millimetres? What about UK and EU sizes?

Yes. Switch to millimetres and every number converts. KDP’s list has 5.06 x 7.81 in (close to UK B-format), 6.14 x 9.21 in (Royal) and 8.27 x 11.69 in (A4). A5 is not on KDP’s list, so choose “Custom size” and press “Use A5”.

Do I need my own barcode for KDP?

No. If you leave the barcode area empty, KDP places a barcode there at no extra cost. You only need your own if you want one in a different spot or print the book somewhere else. KDP then asks for at least 1.4 x 0.8 in, 100% black on white, at least 0.25 in from the spine and trim.

Does it work for IngramSpark?

Not yet. Only KDP’s numbers are used, and other printers use their own paper thickness, so the spine width would differ. For an IngramSpark edition, use IngramSpark’s own cover template generator.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The numbers and the template are made in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our server.
