Price add-on (optional)

The small second barcode

The add-on is optional. Some US booksellers ask for it, so ask your distributor; 90000 means "no price encoded".

Who needs this?

KDP and IngramSpark can both add the barcode for you: KDP when you leave the barcode area of your cover empty, and IngramSpark when you use its cover template generator. This generator is for everyone else: UK and EU authors who buy their own ISBNs, books printed by a local or offset printer or another print-on-demand service, and designers who place the barcode on a cover they lay out themselves.

// How it works

Three steps, all in your browser

1

Check the ISBN

The check digit is verified. An ISBN-10 is turned into its 978 ISBN-13, the number every book barcode carries.

2

Encode it the GS1 way

Bars, guard bars, quiet zones and the optional five-digit add-on follow the GS1 General Specifications, the standard behind EAN-13.

3

Download it

A vector PDF with 100% black bars, an SVG, or a 300 DPI PNG, sized from 80% to 200% of the GS1 standard size.

Good to know

  • Hyphens on the “ISBN” line come from what you type. Correct hyphenation needs the ISBN agency’s range tables, so an ISBN typed without hyphens is shown without them.
  • The digits are set in Helvetica or Arial. GS1 recommends OCR-B but accepts any clearly legible font.
  • The PNG and SVG are plain black on white. For print, the PDF is best: its bars are 100% black ink only.
  • Only the five-digit add-on is offered. The two-digit add-on is for magazines and other serials.

// FAQ

Questions

ISBN-10 or ISBN-13: which goes in the barcode?

Always the 13-digit ISBN. If you type an ISBN-10, the tool adds 978 in front and works out the new last digit. ISBNs that start with 979 have no ISBN-10.

What is the price add-on?

The small five-digit barcode on the right. In the US it is a 5 followed by the price: 51499 means $14.99, and 90000 means no price is encoded. It is optional. If you add one to a KDP cover, KDP says it must match your list price.

How big should the barcode be?

GS1's standard size uses 0.33 mm bars and allows 80% to 200% of that. At 100% this barcode is about 1.47 x 1.20 in, or 2.17 x 1.20 in with the add-on. KDP suggests 2 x 1.2 in, accepts at least 1.4 x 0.8 in, and wants it at least 0.25 in from the spine and trim.

Do I need this for KDP?

No. If you leave the barcode area of your KDP cover empty, KDP places a barcode there at no extra cost, and KDP recommends that if your own barcode fails its scan check. Use this generator if you print somewhere else, or want your own barcode on the cover anyway.

Will it scan?

The bars follow the GS1 tables and the tool is tested against them and against an independent barcode reader. Still, scan a printed proof with a phone barcode app before a large print run.

Is my ISBN uploaded?

No. The barcode is drawn in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our server.
