// How it works

Three steps, all in your browser

1

Pick the format and marketplace

Paperback on 13 Amazon marketplaces, or eBook on Amazon.com, .co.uk, .de, .fr, .es, .it and .nl. Results stay in that marketplace’s currency.

2

Get KDP’s own formula

Paperback: royalty rate x list price, minus printing cost. eBook: rate x (price minus VAT), minus delivery cost on the 70% option. Rates and costs come from KDP’s help pages.

3

Work back from what you want

Type the royalty you want per copy and see the lowest list price that earns it, inside KDP’s price rules.

Good to know

  • Paperback only for print; hardcover and Amazon.co.jp are not covered. eBooks on Amazon.ca and Amazon.com.au are left out because KDP’s eBook pages give no tax figure for them.
  • Amounts stay in each marketplace’s own currency. Exchange rates change daily, so nothing is converted.
  • eBook VAT is the rate KDP lists for buyers in the marketplace’s own country. Buyers elsewhere pay their own country’s VAT, and buyers outside KDP’s 70% territories earn you 35%.
  • Expanded Distribution is open to some trim size and paper combinations only. KDP’s Expanded Distribution page has the chart.

// FAQ

Questions

What royalty does KDP pay on paperbacks?

60% of the list price at $9.99 or more on Amazon.com (£7.99 on Amazon.co.uk, €9.99 on the euro marketplaces), and 50% at $9.98 or less. KDP then takes the printing cost out of that share. Expanded Distribution pays 40% minus printing.

How is the printing cost worked out?

A fixed cost per book plus a cost per page, which depends on the ink, the paper, the marketplace and whether the trim size is regular or large. Short black-ink books pay one flat fee: up to 110 pages on Amazon.com, that is $2.30 for a regular trim size.

What changed for eBooks in 2026?

Since July 7, 2026, the 70% royalty option covers list prices from $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com (it used to stop at $9.99). The UK band is £1.77–£12.99 and the euro band €2.69–€12.99, VAT included.

Does VAT lower my royalty?

For paperbacks, no: you set the price without VAT, Amazon adds VAT on top, and KDP pays on the price without VAT. For eBooks, the list price includes VAT, so KDP takes the VAT out first; a higher VAT rate means a smaller royalty from the same price.

Is this the royalty I will be paid?

It is an estimate from KDP’s published rates. The figures in your KDP Bookshelf are the ones that count, and tax withholding depends on your tax profile, which this page does not cover. This is not tax advice.

Is anything uploaded?
